Exchange Fees: Hidden and Visible — Explained Simply

Why "Zero Commission" Is a Marketing Myth
Every exchange must earn money to exist — the question is where the margin is hidden. When you see "no commission," the earnings are always somewhere else: usually in the spread.
What Makes Up the Real Exchange Fee
1. Spread (bid/ask difference) — the biggest hidden cost. If the market rate is $65,000 and the exchange gives you $64,000, that's a $1,000 spread (1.5%). "Zero commission" exchanges earn here. Typical spreads: 0.1–0.3% on exchanges, 0.5–2% on swap services, 2–5% at physical locations.
2. Network fee — paid to blockchain miners, not the exchange. BTC: $1–15; ETH: $2–50; USDT TRC-20: $0.5–2; USDT BEP-20: $0.1–0.5. May be included in the rate or charged separately — always ask.
3. Service fee — an explicit markup, typically 0.5–2%. The honest approach: you know exactly what you pay.
Real Calculation Example
Exchanging 0.5 BTC → USDT at market rate $65,000: market value $32,500, exchange at $64,000 (1.5% spread) gives $32,000, minus $5 network fee, minus 0.5% service fee ($160) = $31,835 received. Total loss: $665 (2.05%). Of that, 74% came from the spread alone.
How to Compare Exchanges Honestly
The only correct comparison: set the same input amount and compare final payouts. Don't compare "commissions" — compare final numbers. BestChange does exactly this.
